RUNAWAYS Beginner Guide: Your First Run to Mexico
Everything a new RUNAWAYS player needs — controls, the rob-pawn-refuel loop, buying your first crowbar, and crossing three state lines to the Mexico border.
RUNAWAYS drops you into Kansas with a warrant, a free sedan, and one job: get to Mexico before the police get you. Between spawn and the border stands a repeating loop — rob, pawn, refuel, upgrade, drive — plus three state-line checkpoints and a two-minute final fight. This guide runs the whole thing in order, from the first house you rob to the escape gate.
Before Your First Run: Lobby Setup
Two minutes of lobby prep saves your first hour:
- Redeem both codes. SUPERCAT gives a free Light Pistol and RUN gives 1,000 Credz — see our codes guide. The Pistol clears the early “Buy a Pistol” mission for free.
- Check the Classes menu. Everyone starts as Basic (free, no perks). Your first 45k Credz should go to Smuggler — +20% running speed, a Small Backpack, and a Crowbar from spawn.
- Look at the Vehicles vendor by Randy’s Garage (the pink building). The free Claptima gets you started; upgrades come later with Credz.
Classes and vehicles are permanent purchases — they persist across every run you ever play.
The Core Loop
Every successful run is the same cycle, repeated until the border:
Loot → Sell → Refuel → Upgrade → Drive → Repeat.
- Loot. Enter houses and stores; press E to grab items. Rings, trophies, laptops, radios, consoles — anything with value. Green houses are easier; red houses hold better loot and safes but hit harder.
- Sell. TrashAmerica Pawn shops are spread across every town. Convert loot to cash here, and buy gear — crowbar, backpacks, ammo, armor — from the same counter.
- Refuel. Exon gas stations sit along the highway. An empty tank in a chase ends the run; top off before every long drive. Fuel gets more expensive the further south you go.
- Upgrade. The progression ladder early on: crowbar ($800) → Small Backpack ($1,000) → better melee → weapons → Medium/Large Backpack.
- Drive south. Read the distance markers, skip isolated houses, and stop only at towns that can sell, feed, and fill in one pass.
Your First Town, Move by Move
The game walks you in with messages from Hugh Dunnit, your Mexico contact, and green arrows on the floor. Follow them, then take over manually:
- Rob the first house you can reach. Two quick items — a trophy and a ring — are enough. Don’t wrestle a TV into the trunk; dropped items stay dropped.
- Drive straight to TrashAmerica Pawn. Sell everything. That’s your starting bankroll.
- Refuel at the Exon station before doing anything else. Then rob the gas station register while the tank fills, and drive out of the search area before the police backup timer hits zero.
- Buy the crowbar ($800) at the pawn shop. With it equipped you can crack safes in red houses, pry ATMs, and open registers — the real money spike.
- Buy the Small Backpack when cash allows. Carrying capacity gates income harder than anything else early.
A crime triggers “Someone called the cops” and a POLICE BACKUP IN countdown — roughly five to six minutes early on, shorter as you progress. When the timer is low, leave. Leaving with 60–70% of a town’s loot beats getting caught with 100%.
Controls That Matter
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| E | Interact / grab loot |
| C | Crouch / slide — breaks line of sight in chases |
| X | Drop current tool — shed weight when fleeing |
Sliding around corners is the cheapest escape tool in the game. If the car gets boxed in, a crowbar clears an officer and a wrench gets a stalled vehicle moving.
The Three Checkpoints and the Border
The map is a southbound checklist. Crossing each state line crashes you through a checkpoint and dispatches police on the other side — expected, survivable, but be fueled before you commit.
| Crossing | What changes |
|---|---|
| Kansas → Oklahoma | Apartment stacks, denser loot, green-house safes |
| Oklahoma → Texas | Densest safe clusters in the game; farm hard here |
| Texas → Mexico | The border: a two-minute survival fight at the gate |
Before the final Texas highway, convert cash into Heavy Armor ($10,000), 15+ medkits, ammo, and a real gun. At the border, activate the escape gate, get inside a closed building, and hold for two minutes. The full prep kit is in our border fight guide, and the state-by-state route in the escape route guide.
Crossing every line and surviving the border ends the run with the International Fugitive badge, plus a Credz payout that scales with distance travelled.
Beginner Mistakes That End Runs
- Touring roadside farms. Isolated highway houses are traps — low loot, full heat. Stick to town clusters.
- Fighting everything. Killing NPCs and officers raises your wanted level; most wipes are star-related, not health-related.
- Driving a dying car. Vehicle health drops from both bullets and collisions. Repair before the car becomes a coffin.
- Spending everything on weapons. Fuel money first, gear second. A broke player in the wrong state parks permanently.
- Hauling junk. A bag of toasters earns nothing. Check item values and drop the $15 basketballs.
FAQ
What is the goal of RUNAWAYS?
Escape from Kansas to Mexico by robbing, pawning, and driving south through Oklahoma and Texas. Survive the border’s two-minute fight and you’ve won the run.
What should I buy first in RUNAWAYS?
In-run: the crowbar ($800), then the Small Backpack. In the lobby: the Smuggler class at 45k Credz — the best value purchase in the game.
How long is a full RUNAWAYS run?
A first, careful escape runs 30–60 minutes. Experienced players with fast vehicles do it quicker; the run ends whenever you die or cross the Mexico gate.
Can you lose the police in RUNAWAYS?
Yes — break line of sight, leave the marked search area, and the pursuit resets. Stars you’ve earned tend to stick around, though, so prevention beats evasion. Details in our wanted level guide.
Do I keep my loot if I die?
No — a run’s loot-cash and inventory are gone on death. Credz, classes, and vehicles purchased in the lobby are permanent.
