RUNAWAYS Escape Route: Kansas to Mexico Walkthrough

The full RUNAWAYS route from Kansas through Oklahoma and Texas to the Mexico border gate — fuel stops, safe farming, checkpoint heat, and badge strategy.

8/25/2026 Last updated: 8/25/2026

The map in RUNAWAYS is one long southbound highway with three state lines and a border gate at the end. Every crossing dispatches police on the far side, so the route is really a sequence of fueled, funded commitments. This walkthrough covers each leg — what to rob, where to pawn, when to refuel, and how to hit the Mexico gate alive.

The Route at a Glance

LegJob on That Stretch
KansasLearn the loop; crowbar + first backpack; fill every container
Kansas → OklahomaFirst checkpoint crossing; expect a dispatch on the other side
OklahomaApartments and green-house safes; buy Heavy Armor here
Oklahoma → TexasSecond crossing; arrive fueled, leave fueled
TexasRichest safe clusters in the game; last US fuel and meds
Texas → MexicoFinal highway; no sightseeing, armor on, medkits packed
BorderActivate the gate, survive two minutes, escape

The loop underneath every leg never changes: Loot → Sell → Refuel → Upgrade → Drive (see the beginner guide). What changes per state is the price of fuel, the density of loot, and the speed of police backup.

Kansas: Build the Machine

Kansas is the tutorial state — cheap gas, slow backup timers, forgiving towns.

  1. Rob the first house, sell at TrashAmerica, refuel at Exon. This is the green-arrow sequence the game walks you through.
  2. Buy the crowbar ($800). Every safe, ATM, and register in the game opens to it.
  3. Rob a red house and crack its safe. Safes pay in Gold Bars ($500) — real money, not toaster money.
  4. Buy the Small Backpack ($1,000), then the Medium ($5,000) if the state pays well.
  5. Pry an ATM and rob the grocery store register before leaving the first town cluster.

Leave Kansas with a full tank, a full backpack, and the crowbar equipped. If the “Buy a Pistol” mission is still open, the free SUPERCAT code pistol clears it.

The First Checkpoint: Into Oklahoma

State lines are crash-through checkpoints, not rest stops. Hit the gate at speed and keep driving — crossing charges everyone in the vehicle with illegally crossing the state line, and police dispatch on the other side.

Two rules for every crossing:

  • Be fueled before you commit. Running dry inside a fresh dispatch zone is the classic first-run death.
  • Be reasonably clean of heat. Crossings spawn their own pursuit; carrying an active chase into a new dispatch doubles the problem. Break away first — leaving the search area resets the pursuit (wanted level guide).

The crossing pops the Kansas Checkpoint badge. Three more badges wait down the road.

Oklahoma: Armor Up

Oklahoma escalates: apartment stacks, denser loot, green-house safes worth detouring for — and faster police backup.

  • Pawn the art, refuel the car, and buy Heavy Armor ($10,000) as soon as the wallet allows. This is the armor that carries you through the border fight.
  • Sweep safes and ATMs between pawn trips. The Oklahoma gun shop register and its safe are a strong payout.
  • Watch the backup timer at every stop. Oklahoma’s timers are shorter than Kansas’s; don’t start a third house when the countdown reads two minutes.
  • Grab a Jerry can — a 20L red can often sits behind a fence at an early station or near an oil rig. Fill it at the pump, mount it on the vehicle, and it stops eating an inventory slot. South of here, fuel prices only climb.

Leave Oklahoma with thousands in cash instead of a trunk full of chairs — and with the Oklahoma Checkpoint badge in hand.

Texas: The Last Pawn Cycle

Texas has the densest safe clusters in the game. This is where a prepared runner gets rich and an unprepared one dies broke.

  • Fill every fuel container. This is the last cheap-ish US gas; the final highway has none worth stopping for.
  • Sell watches and rings — past $10,000 cash if the run is clean — and raid the bank and armory if your kit supports it. Banks attract attention; bring an escape plan.
  • Pack medkits until the bag has no junk left. 15 is the solo floor for the border; packed runners carry 23+.
  • Repair the car. A helicopter over a Texas Exon can still end a sedan; don’t hand it a half-dead one.

If a Texas gas lot turns into a pileup, shoot only enough to refuel and leave. Treat the 50-player server’s other runners as weather.

The Final Highway and the Border Gate

Drive the last stretch without sightseeing:

  1. Top off at the last Exon you can reach in Texas. Loot the adjoining shop only if the tank is already full and your stars are livable.
  2. Drive south, straight, until the border facility appears. If the car dies on the approach, abandon it and run — the gate still counts on foot.
  3. Enter the facility and activate the escape gate. The run is done when the gate takes you through, not when your car crosses a painted line.

When the gate opens: BIENVENIDO A MÉXICO, then YOU ESCAPED. The end-of-run summary reports distance travelled, cash earned, wanted level, and borders crossed — 4 of 4. The two-minute survival fight at the gate has its own border guide.

FAQ

What is the fastest route to Mexico in RUNAWAYS?

The highway, straight south, stopping only at towns that sell, feed, and refuel in one pass. Speed-runners skip isolated houses entirely and live on register robberies and distance Credz — but a first win should farm Texas safes properly.

Do you have to fight police at every state line?

Crossing dispatches police on the other side, but a dispatch is not a fight — keep driving, break line of sight, and leave the search area. Fights are optional; chases are not.

Where is the last gas station before Mexico?

The last Exon cluster sits in southern Texas. Fill the tank and the Jerry can there; the final highway has no reliable fuel.

Can you finish on foot if your car dies?

Yes. The escape counts when you pass the gate — vehicle or not. Abandon a dead car immediately; a stationary target in the border zone is a coffin.

What does escaping to Mexico give you?

The International Fugitive badge, an end-of-run summary, and a Credz payout that scales with distance travelled — one of the three pillars of earning Credz.
